Saving Filipino Deer

The Calamanian Deer, Prince Alfred’s Spotted Deer and Philippine Brown Deer, all endemic to the Philippines, are threatened by deforestation and illegal poaching.

The Prince Alfred Spotted Deer was included on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red list of threatened species as having “endangered” status caused largely by habitat diminution and hunting pressure.

The 1985 survey on the decline of the Spotted Deer indicated that it is bound to be extinct in  09 percent of its breeding range,  according to Update correspondent Ysabel San Pedro.

A tentative management plan for development of 40000 hectares of forest areas  in the new Mt. Baloy National Park is being undertaken and funding efforts to launch the development of a captive breeding program are ongoing.

The breeding program is financed  by  Melbourne Zoo, San Diego Zoological Society and Silliman University in Dumaguete City , Philippines.

LIDAR for Philippines

The US $ .036 million LIDAR, a technology transfer project from Australia , is being built by the Ateneo de Manila University young scientists, reports Update correspondent, Ysabel San Pedro.

The first Philippine made LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging System) to be used I as a pollution device will be completed in 1992.

The project will consist of the ND-YAG (Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet ) laser as a transmitter, telescope as a receiver coupled with a detector for analysis and interpretation.

The LIDAR will scientifically monitor details such as the amount of pollution in terms of source, nature identification, type, number and degree of damage. It will function as a pollution index that will allow the city of Manila and its other metropolises to be compared with the pollution densities of Seoul, Jakarta, Washington D.C., and Paris.

The LIDAR is currently being tested for meteorological detection. This function will detect the amount of rain water in the clouds which can be seeded to control the amount of rainfall to prevent droughts brought about by the El Nino phenomenon around the globe.

Remembering Mt. Pinatubo

I had the opportunity to personally sympathize
with the victims of Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
The volcano was dormant for 600 years.
My article about the survivors of Mt. Pinatubo published in Sarimanok

Nail Polish

At the fix-over parlor
Burring and buzzing of female bumble bees
sprayers and rollers fashion the hair
to be an artistic gismo.

All these kyoodle
was more of a sphygmoid make-over.
Heliothrope,  sap green,  buff,  ivory blue,
cadmium red, golden euchre, and lavender pink
nail shadows in pentel
complicates the rainbows
of aesthetic pastiche.

Comes to discover
the cosmetic booster
bulls-eyed the circumference
of wearing water-color polish
of the lady finger
atavistic  and coquettish
Surely a woman’s fail-side fetish.

Vas Deferens

Missile attack
countdown -8- 7- 6- 5- 4- 3- 2- 1-
rocks off!

Way-out into a convoluted cosmic space
was a braille page in red days
tantrum – rifely executed
conks out
sang- froid
nobody else could avoid.

Seminal science
vas deferens toward observed free-science
was insemination of artificial
information dis-ruptured of whole cloth
A noisome zap
blanket stitching the gap
of  nu- clear atomic molecule
as assasin’s allure.
We will wear come the future.

Crooked Talk

Tap…tap… tap…
Inside
I saw prying noses
owl-like spectacles
mouths reeking  archeological finds
streaked me bleached with polychromatic screens

Felt I was greatly corpulent  filled  with
fungus   feathered  moss
A stranger in reckless abandon
listening to hopscotch lectures of poetry and story

No more no less
Their unmeasured aloofness
Waylayed in suspension
I aligned myself in their single file
trying to catch the cadence run-on crippled
Till my professor took note of my smell
Told me to stand straight
I sputtered out my scent of rubberized rhymes
At last, her ear-wide smile says it all.

Tondo

Swatting flies flung into the rice
coffee indescribably brewed of urine tea
their croissants  crumbs of glued flour
their margarine was more like cooking lard
and the eggs were centuries’  brined
I slowly munched on the flies floured in
lard and brined to let it stay fresh
masticating every limp morsel
transfixed in the meal
tasting their pennies
the coppered skins toasted my pigments
finally, letting all of it
hustled down in the dam
letting their gnarled palms touch me
rubbed me in Tondo.*

Identity

Along the angler- track
I herded the river bank
wishing to rinse my sins sincerely.
I looked into the delphinian blue
stonefully pale I  slapped mud face to face
make the floor notice
but what I saw was ten centavo shingles
curdling in clusters oozing with  mulch
spitted saliva  to my dismay
when it stretched  the fishes yawned
and volleyed its spit into my eye.

Squatter

A flak of gunpowder molotovs
cobwebbed the pit mired in the warren
scaffolds or plywood and mud cakes
tornadoed  families  faceless
benign crags and scoriae
festooned  in the fetid winds
watch the shadows lambent
as it thaws in the tumid cyst
Candles  snuffed out
their birthdays blown-out.

The Ride

Toss, turn and tackle the ride
Hold still, let your breath fly
Up, up and away, you braced – turned aside

This is not Generation Y
Come have another pipe session
Disinter your guts, be wise

Unsettle yourself ,   go through the emotions
Don’t retch, Heaven Forbid
Take the winds with caution.

My friend, be intrepid!
It’s worth a joint,   never ask why
Or risk being insipid.

Hit yourself with a rock, never ask why
It’s as vivid as a kiss
Just take it all with a big man’s sigh

Shoot your head without a miss
Hold still, let your balls fly
To the max, pain,  pleasure ,  that’s practice
Toss, turn… yeah  go tackle the ride.

The Real Me

putrefying breath inhaled
morning air exhaled
it was a science
i could call a cycle

i am into this
it needs to be rolled on one cheek
and sucked in the other
an orgastic body

i am born with
together with the wind
we fly like clean clothes
swinging on their line

my moisted lips
parted to be made dry
i conquered the censure
as i drove deeper

into the white freeway
i  became red
as i saw an officer
swearing the truth

Futility

Alive,
I become everything
I most likely can be.
I paced through all the spaces,
I awake into the white.
It is not simple …
I am fated
to revolt
toward the truth
that could change me.
I am trudging
taking sunlight
into my embrace.
I am moving …
into my own being.
I sensed the kill,
the will of being,
it must be everything
of what living could be.

Narra

As snow melts into rivers
and rain runs into the fields,
your eagle-spread branches
stared sky-high into the sun.

I could see you from a distance.
providing shade to the children.
learning how to rhyme and reason
to write and to rue their lots.

It was in this enclave
that you remain in mystery.
You are over 50 years old now.
My boy, yet you were not
afflicted with scoliosis
as well as disoriented by Alzheimer’s.

I see your brown rings
as well defined as possible,
your green mane as bushy as ever
your body as muscular as a wrestler.

You seem to have crow’s nest or two,
as well as a balding spot, too.
But it doesn’t bother you
as these kids engrave hearts into
your tummy like temporary tattoos.

Some embellished it with blood
and tears of happiness or sorrow.
You only hated
the jagged edge of my kitchen knife.

Normally, you do not mind a nick
but be piqued by a prick
since you are so bloody sensitive.
You came from a place tropical
and warm. They call you,  “Narra”
You serve as a good shelter
and excellent source of  lumber
(not to  mention a great swinger.)

People here respect you
defer to your  majesty.
Your spirit soars into the sea
into and over the heavens.
You grow into me, I into you –
I used to see you young and vibrant.
Now, you are a bit weary but wise
Narra, my name is still etched into you.
Thank you.

Tinian

Seventy-degree summer breeze
Coconut crabs. Hermit crabs
shed their suits,
as they saunter in the sunshine.

Magnolias and white daffodils
sway to the silence.
I could hear the murmuring
maidens masturbating
in their mirthful innocence.

Sea horses. Wild urchins.
Dwarf Octopuses. Mahi- mahi
Rainbow and Parrot fishes.
Blue Marlin and Blue lakes
All is here for us to feast.

Let us begin
Spear fishing and swimming into the hole
the underbellies of the midnight fire
entwine in the moon’s embrace.

Always applaud the waves
Once it rushes to welcome you.
Tinian
It’s light and dark
brooding moments
keep it alive.

See the Japanese smiling
As they catch a boatful
of babies in the ocean.
Drinking saki ,  eating sashimi

“Oishi”, they say
with their lobster leavened buddies
beaten to the bone.
They sleep in here forever
and forget themselves
in the wellspring of  the unconscious.
